Portugal news - A Spanish view of Olhão in Portugal’s sunny Algarve is revealed by ¡HOLA! magazine this summer.
Olhão is the perfect traditional seaside town of the Algarve to unwind, according to the Spanish magazine reporter who was charmed by the lively market day on Saturday mornings, with its stalls filled with fruit and vegetables, traditional sweets, honey, crafts and flowers, which cause a sensation among visitors.
The largest fishing port in the Algarve provides the market stalls of Olhão with the freshest seafood, including sea bass, corvina, horse mackerel, octopus, sardines, cuttlefish, rays, and swordfish.
For the savvy consumers, Olhão is best enjoyed with an aperitif in one of the nearby bars, and dried octopus roe with a glass of wine is just the thing to enjoy the view.
While the aroma of traditional recipes escapes through the curtains of Portuguese houses covered with tiles, visitors may go discover the winding streets of Olhão and enjoy the special feel of the Cubist city of the Algarve with its cobbled streets, gleaming white houses and blue doors that are characteristic of the Portuguese Algarve.
Small boutique hotels are opening in Olhão that, while preserving the beauty of its old buildings, offer visitors a very tempting option for accommodation. According to reporter Christina Fernandez, there is no trip worth its salt in which gastronomy is not an added bonus, and the Portuguese seaside town has a number of French, Swiss and Portuguese restaurants to sample, but the most precious treasure on this side of the Algarve is its oysters.
For the more adventurous, a boat trip to Culatra island is the place to go, to enjoy not only the rustic houses, but also the deserted golden beaches.
