Portugal News – Europe launches its own ChatGPT, a multilingual AI large language model called EuroLLM developed in collaboration with Portuguese partners including tech company Unbabel.
Europe’s own version of ChatGPT, called EuroLLM, is a new multilingual large language model supporting all 24 official EU languages that was developed in collaboration with Portuguese partners including tech startup and future unicorn Unbabel.
Europe is stepping-up its game for AI sovereignty with the launch of multilingual AI EuroLLM that is already available on AI platform Hugging Face and on Widn.AI. Since it is an open-source model, users are actively encouraged to use it, to improve it and to develop new technologies based on it.
EuroLLM-9B was developed in collaboration with Unbabel, Instituto de Telecomunicações, Instituto Superior Técnico, the University of Edinburgh, Aveni, Université Paris-Saclay, the University of Amsterdam, the Sorbonne University, and Naver Labs. EuroLLM was trained on MareNostrum, one of Europe’s most advanced supercomputers, at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) and the project is supported by the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU) and by the EU’s Horizon Europe Research and Innovation Actions.
This marks an important milestone for Portugal’s tech industry and for the development of multilingual AI that delivers unparalleled accuracy, efficiency, and speed for task-specific applications.
With the development of EuroLLM with Portuguese partners, Portugal’s AI sector is leading innovation as the project aims to create a flywheel for developing new opportunities for collaboration and growth while levelling the playing field by closing language gaps across Europe and the rest of the world.
