Portugal Business News - Europe’s largest data center, Start Campus in Portugal, is now connected to the EllaLink subsea cable.

Portugal’s data center campus, that is located in the port of Sines, includes a 1.2 GW green data center with a sustainable ecosystem that harnesses ocean cooling and uses 100% renewable energy. Start Campus will soon be building a second data center that will be completed in 2026 and has just announced an investment of 20 million euros for the purchase of Siemens transformers.

Portugal’s mega data center Start Campus, that is a joint venture between US investment firm Davidson Kempner Capital Management and UK company Pioneer Point Partners, has a total combined investment value of 8.5 billion euros.

"Data has been identified as the new 'oil' of the digital economy and Portugal will benefit from this large investment in Sines that will place the country at the core of transatlantic and global data networks," stated Sam Abboud of Pioneer Point Partners.

Europe’s largest data center campus within Portugal’s Atlantic Hub in Sines is now connected to EllaLink, and the new optical backbone provides enhanced connectivity, reduced latency and access to a global network. This strategic move strengthens EllaLink's global presence through its partnership with the largest Data Centre being rolled out in Europe. Through EllaLink's fibre network expansion, Start Campus SINES DC customers will be able to connect to an 8.000 km optical backbone between Continental Europe, Africa, LATAM and French Guiana. With this expansion, EllaLink continues to solidify its position as a leading provider of submarine cable solutions, connecting continents and driving digital transformation.

Portugal’s green data center hub empowers robust interconnection capabilities, benefiting both the tech industry and the local economy. The enhanced connectivity in an ultra-low latency between several Atlantic landings represents faster data transfers and improved application performance, thus providing businesses with opportunities to reach new markets.

International operators already linked to Portugal’s Start Campus green data center include German company DE-CIX, that recently published a report that shows that Portugal is the best interconnection hub globally, stating the Top 5 main reasons.
