Portugal travel news – Lisbon airport has the highest increase in number of passengers in the EU in 2022, according to data just released by Eurostat. While Lisbon airport ranks No 6 in the Top 10 EU airports, it ranks No 1 with the highest percentage increase with +184%.
Portugal as a whole also ranks in the Top 5 countries registering an increase in number of passengers for air transport in 2022, according to Eurostat.

Here are the Top 5 EU countries registering an increase in number of passengers for air transport in 2022:
1 – Ireland – registered an increase of +256%
2 – Finland - registered an increase of +203%
3 – Slovakia - registered an increase of +203%
4 – Hungary - registered an increase that was well above the EU average of +119%
5 – Portugal - registered an increase that was well above the EU average of +119%
In 2022, the total number of passengers travelling by air in the EU was 820 million, a substantial increase of more than double (+119%) compared with 2021 (374 million), after the strong decline of 73% in 2020 compared with 2019 due to pandemic restrictions.
Extra-EU passenger transport represented 47% of total air passenger transport in 2022, while intra-EU transport represented 37% and national transport represented 16%.
