Portugal news – Portugal just ordered twelve more A-29N Super Tucano light attack aircraft from Brazilian company Embraer, that represents an investment of around 200 million euros. With this new order, Portugal will own 17 A-29N Super Tucano aircraft and convinces Embraer to choose Portugal as its European hub.

The Embraer A-29N Super Tucano light attack aircraft will be partially built in Portugal, with 75 million euros expected to be re-invested in Portugal’s aerospace industry. This will allow Embraer to reconfigure its A-29N Super Tucano aircraft to NATO standards and specifications for selling to NATO countries. Portugal's new order for light attack aircraft from Embraer includes flight simulators and logistics.

The Embraer KC-390 aircraft was also reconfigured in Portugal to be in line with NATO standards and specifications. Portugal ordered five KC-390 aircraft and a simulator from Embraer for a value of 850 million euros in 2019, two of which have already been delivered, in order to replacing the Hercules C-130.

Portugal’s Minister of National Defense highlighted at the signing of the contract at OGMA that the financial return of around 75 million euros that the Portuguese government expects to have with the purchase of twelve A-29N Super Tucano aircraft from Embraer will strengthen Portugal’s aerospace industry, including the training of pilots in Portugal. With this new development, OGMA in Portugal will become the maintenance hub for the new version of the Super Tucano for Europe, Asia and Africa.

Portugal’s Minister of Economy, Pedro Reis, highlighted the fact that this agreement between Embraer and Portugal Defence is built around a “virtuous economic model” in which the Armed Forces are modernized while State resources are re-invested in Portuguese companies.

Portugal’s Defense industries, that encompass around 300 companies and employ 30,000 people, account for 2.5% of Portugal’s exports from the Defence sector.

Embraer has recently chosen Portugal to open its first office in Europe, that will bring to Portugal Embraer’s capabilities and technology and will ensure the commercialization of Embraer’s aircraft from Portugal to Europe from the outset.
