Portugal news – Portugal’s new airport in Setúbal will open up its celeb hotspot in Melides where members of royalty and celebrities enjoy secret holidays.

The resolution that formalizes the creation of Lisbon’s new airport, the Luís de Camões airport, was published in Portugal’s Government gazette on May 27th, 2024. Lisbon’s new airport will be located in Alcochete in the district of Setúbal, that is in the southern part of Lisbon’s metropolitan area.

The district of Setúbal, that includes the Alentejo, is famous for jetsetters and celebrities that come to enjoy top-secret holidays along the pristine coastline that borders the Atlantic. The luxury holiday destination includes Melides, where fashion designer Christian Louboutin has 2 hotels, namely Vermelho hotel (meaning Red hotel) and La Salvada.

Melides in southern Portugal is also the place where celebrity hotspot CostaTerra Golf and Ocean Club resort attracts both celebs and royalty and where Princess Eugenie’s husband, Jack Brooksbank, works in sales and marketing. Prince Harry and Meghan enjoyed a top-secret holiday in Melides in southern Portugal in September 2023 and they were able to relax without drawing media attention.

The district of Setúbal, that includes the pristine Alentejo region, is Portugal’s new luxury tourism destination with its empty stretches of golden sand overlooking a lagoon where dolphins can be seen. It is surrounded by a preserved natural environment where the Sado Estuary Natural Reserve and the Arrábida Natural Park are located.

Portugal’s new Luís de Camões Airport in the district of Setúbal will be linked to the capital via a third crossing of the Tagus River that is to be built. With the formalization of Lisbon’s new airport, the airport concessionaire ANA Aeroportos, that is owned by French company VINCI Airports, has six months to prepare the report for the Luís de Camões Airport that should be operational in 2030.
