Portugal news - Portuguese Laura Carreira just received the Best Film Director Silver Shell award for “On Falling” together with Film Director Pedro Martín-Calero for “El llanto” (The Wailing) at the San Sebastian International Film Festival in Spain.

"On Falling" is Laura Carreira's first feature film, after having directed the 'shorts' "Red Hill" (2018) and "The Shift" (2020). In "On Falling", the central figure is Aurora, a young Portuguese woman who has emigrated to Scotland and, while she works in a warehouse, she finds it difficult to make ends meet and socialize in a house shared with other immigrants.

Laura Carreira’s film also received an honorable mention in the 'Otra Mirada' award, awarded by RTVE, Spanish public television. Laura Carreira, who was born in Porto in 1994, moved to Scotland in 2012 to study Cinema, coinciding with the economic crisis that hit Portugal, and she still lives and works in the United Kingdom.

Supported by the Institute of Cinema and Audiovisual (ICA), "On Falling" has a Portuguese production from BRO Cinema, in co-production with the United Kingdom, through Sixteen Films. Starring actress Joana Santos, "On Falling" had its world premiere this month at the Toronto International Film Festival in Canada and was part of the official competition in San Sebastian.
