Portugal news - Portuguese metalworking company ASM Metalomecânica partners with CERN in Switzerland to improve the performance of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in a project of 1.5 million euros.

 

Portuguese metalworking company ASM Metalomecânica is producing four helium reservoirs (28m long, 250m³, 70 tons) that are essential to keep the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at extreme temperatures of -271.3ºC. The first two made-in-Portugal helium reservoirs have already been sent to Switzerland and the other two will be heading to France soon.

 

This CERN project is part of the "High Luminosity Large Hadron Collider" (HL-LHC) and aims to increase the performance of the LHC by 2029, enabling significant scientific advances.

 

Pedro Pinheiro, the Administrator of ASM Metalomecânica, highlighted: “We are convinced that the improvement of the Large Hadron Collider will continue to drive important scientific discoveries.”

 

According to José Antão, Industrial Liaison Officer at ANI, ASM Metalomecânica is one of the Portuguese companies with the largest and most diversified market share in the Science & Technology sector. Their first global client was CERN in 1999, but since then, the company collaborated with Fusion for Energy, for the European Southern Observatory and for the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics.

 

With a turnover of around 12 million euros and more than 100 employees, the Portuguese company focuses on the qualification of its employees as an essential factor for the future of the organization.

 

This new partnership between CERN and Portuguese metalworking company ASM Metalomecânica signals the quality and competitiveness of the Portuguese metalworking sector, including the manufacture of Helium gas reservoirs that are an essential component for the cryogenic systems of international Big Science organizations.
