Portugal news - Portuguese SMEs lead growth in e-commerce in the EU, according to a new report by the Mastercard Economics Institute.
Portugal is the European country where the share of online spending in SMEs grew the most, increasing from 33% in 2021 to 39% in 2024, especially in the travel and retail sectors.
Small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) are the heart of the EU economy as they make up almost all businesses and account for nearly two thirds of the labor force, according to Eurostat.
In 2024, spending at SMBs is now outperforming large businesses across key industries. Most EU countries show SMBs becoming more competitive in retail in 2024, specifically in grocery, consumer electronics, and in travel & entertainment (T&E). Moreover, spending at small clothing businesses is outperforming spending at large businesses in countries like Austria, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Portugal.
