Travel and Tourism News EU – The above chart shows the Top 10 EU cities by number of guest nights in 2023 via the four largest online booking platforms, namely Airbnb, Booking, Expedia Group and Tripadvisor, according to Eurostat. Here are the tourism statistics for the EU between 2019 and 2024 as well as the most popular EU regions for short-term stays during the summer in 2024.
In 2024, guests spent 854.1 million nights in short-term rental accommodation in the EU, booked via Airbnb, Booking, Expedia Group or TripAdvisor. The number of guest nights via booking platforms in the EU in 2024 represents an increase of 18.8% compared to 2023, with 719.0 million nights.
In 2022, 597 million nights were spent in short-term rental accommodation, that represents an increase of more than 20% compared to 2021 when 364 million guest nights were spent in accommodation via online booking platforms. This means that the number of guest nights are following an upward trend since 2022 and are already far above pre-pandemic levels, with 512 million guest nights in 2019.
It is important to note seasonality in tourism, since that more than 1 out of 3 guest nights were spent in the peak months of July and August.
What were the most popular EU regions for short-term stays during the summer in 2024?
During the summer of 2024, the most popular EU regions for short-term rental accommodation booked via online platforms were Jadranska Hrvatska in Croatia with 25.2 million nights, that is an increase of +6.0% compared with the third quarter of 2023, followed by Andalucía in Spain with 17.2 million nights, that is an increase of +23.1% and the French Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur with 15.6 million nights, that is an increase of +26.2%.
