Portugal news - The chart shows the Top 10 EU countries with the highest percentage of renewable energy consumption in 2023, according to the latest Eurostat figures.
While renewable energy accounts for 24.5% of gross final energy consumption in the EU in 2023, Sweden ranks first among EU countries, with two-thirds (66.4%) of its gross final energy consumption coming from renewable sources in 2023. Sweden relied mainly on solid biofuels, hydro and wind energy. Finland ranks 2nd with 50.8% of energy consumption coming from renewable energy sources, mainly from solid biofuels, wind and hydro energy; while Denmark ranks 3rd with 44.9% of energy consumption coming from renewables, mainly from solid biofuels and wind energy.
In Portugal, there has been a massive increase in the share of renewable energy consumption between 2023 and 2024, since renewable energy consumption in Portugal went from 35.16% in 2023 to more than 72% of electricity consumed in 2024. Moreover, Portugal has an ambitious goal of reaching 93% of renewable energy consumption by 2030.
