Tech news Europe - What is the name of the European version of LLM ChatGPT and the name of the LLM versions of individual European countries as well as their launch date?
While there is a European version of the LLM (Large Language Model) ChatGPT, many countries are developing their own versions in line with EU directives.
1 - What is the name of the European version of LLM ChatGPT?
The European version of LLM ChatGPT is being developed under the name Open Euro LLM. The consortium developing the European version of ChatGPT started the project on February 1st, 2025, with funding from the European Commission under the Digital Europe Programme.
Europe's leading AI companies and research institutions are combining their expertise to develop next-generation open-source language models in an unprecedented collaboration to advance European AI capabilities. The European version of LLM ChatGPT will develop transparent and compliant open-source models.
A consortium of 20 leading European research institutions, companies and EuroHPC centres coordinated by Jan Hajič of Charles University in Czechia and co-led by Peter Sarlin of AMD Silo AI in Finland will build a family of performant, multilingual, large language foundation models for commercial, industrial and public services in cooperation with open-source and open science communities like LAION, open-sci and OpenML.
The Open Euro LLM initiative, which has already secured EUR 34 million in funding from the European Commission and other contributors, aims to deliver the first version of the model in 18 months, with a final version expected by 2028.
2 - Will each European country have its own version of LLM ChatGPT?
The European version of ChatGPT, the Open Euro LLM project is part of a larger plan to create AI models for all languages in the European Union through the OpenEuroLLM project. This way, each country can have an intelligent assistant that understands its language and culture as best as possible. The OpenEuroLLM project seeks to create a multilingual language model capable of understanding and generating text in 32 European languages, while embedding the cultural context of each country.
3 - Here are the names and launch dates of the LLM ChatGPT version of 6 European countries:
1 – France
French AI LLM chatbot Le Chat was developed by Mistral and, not only is it currently the fastest of them all, but it can also generate images. French LLM chatbot Le Chat was launched in September 2023.
French AI LLM chatbot Le Chat integrates an image generator based on a German AI model from the company Black Forest Labs that makes it possible to generate photorealistic images.

French AI LLM chatbot Le Chat is currently the fastest in the world, capable of generating up to 1,100 tokens per second, that is about 13 times faster than LLM ChatGPT’s 85 tokens per second.
Mistral Large has since received additional capabilities and the French LLM chatbot understands English, French, Spanish, German, and Italian, taking grammar and cultural context into account. However, Le Chat LLM chatbot lacks a voice assistant for both voice input and voice output.
Mistral SAS was founded on April 28, 2023, in Paris.
2 – Portugal
Portugal’s AI LLM chatbot is named Amália after the famous Portuguese fado singer and the name also stands for the acronym “Automatic Multimodal Language Assistant with Artificial Intelligence”. Portugal’s LLM Amália will be launched officially in June 2026.
Portuguese AI LLM chatbot Amália is the first AI developed specifically to understand and communicate in European Portuguese.
In addition to understanding texts, Amália will also be able to work with images and sounds, and is being trained on a very powerful supercomputer, called MareNostrum 5, which is located in Barcelona.
Amália can be used in education as a virtual tutor, in Public Administration to simplify services and for the growth of companies.
Some of the entities involved in this process are: Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Instituto de Telecommunications, Instituto Superior Técnico, Universities of Coimbra, Porto e Minho, Beira Interior and Évora.
3 – Spain
The Spanish version of LLM ChatGPT is called Alia and was launched on January 20, 2025.
Alia (known as “ChatGPT in Spanish”) is a “large language model” (LLM) in Castilian and other official languages in Spain (Galician, Catalan, Valencian and Basque).
The Spanish LLM is an open-source tool that can be used, for example, by companies as a starting point to develop their own models.
The Spanish Government is developing with two pilot projects to apply Spanish LLM Alia to the national Tax Agency and to the health sector. In the first case, the objective is to streamline the Tax agency's work and, in the second, to improve the diagnosis of heart failure, according to the Spanish Government.
4 – Italy
The Italian version of LLM ChatGPT is called Minerva and was launched on November 27, 2024.
The Italian LLM is called Minerva7B, where 7B stands for 7 billion parameters, and was developed by Rome's La Sapienza University. It was funded by the EU Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP) funds, in collaboration with the high-tech company Cineca which made the Leonardo supercomputer available.
5 – Netherlands
The Netherlands developed its own version of LLM ChatGPT and it is named GPT-NL. A Dutch LLM aims at fostering a supportive ecosystem involving academic institutions, companies, and government and it is a language model based on Dutch law.
With GPT-NL, the Netherlands has its own language model starting in 2025. The Dutch LLM project was developed in collaboration with TNO, SURF and the Netherlands Forensic Institute, with the aim of safeguarding the digital sovereignty of the Netherlands, since it is a language model for more sensitive documents, such as government information, police reports or health insurance documents, and it ensures that no “backdoor” is built into GPT-NL that would allows people to look in, and the AVG, for example, is strictly adhered to.
The Dutch LLM was developed in collaboration with supercomputer company SURF, among others.
6 – Sweden
The name of the Swedish version of LLM ChatGPT is GPT-SW3 and it was launched on December 1st, 2023.
Swedish LLM GPT-SW3 is built on massive amounts of Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, Icelandic and English text data with the explicit purpose of being able to generate Swedish and Nordic languages texts.
The Swedish large-scale generative language model was developed for Nordic languages by AI Sweden in collaboration with RISE and the WASP WARA for Media and Language.
