Travel news Europe - What is the trending destination in Europe for Americans this summer?
Since the US is close to replacing the UK as Portugal’s No 1 source market for tourism, Portugal has announced direct flights from New York to Faro airport this summer and Portugal’s pristine Algarve beaches will be trending for tourists from North America.
This summer, Portugal’s Algarve will have direct links to three new markets: the United States, through New York with United Airlines (with flights starting from May 2025), Finland through Helsinki with Finnair, and Iceland through Reykjavik with Play. With these new direct flights to Portugal’s Algarve, Faro airport will have flights to 22 international markets, with hubs in London with 147 weekly flights, in Dublin with 51 weekly flights, in Paris with 30 weekly flights, in Amsterdam with 22 weekly flights, and Frankfurt with 17 weekly flights.
Portugal is quickly becoming a favorite tourist destination for Americans, especially for tourists coming from Maine, from Massachusetts, from Vermont, from the District of Columbia, and from Rhode Island. The US already ranks Number 1 market for tourism in Lisbon, according to an ABC News documentary.
Faro airport in Portugal’s Algarve has registered 9.8 million passengers in 2024, that represents an increase of 2%. However, the Algarve’s Faro airport registered "a new record in the 2024 winter season, with a 38% increase in seating capacity compared to winter 2019 and a +6% increase compared to 2023", according to Thierry Ligonnière, CEO of ANA (Aeroportos de Portugal, SA).
While Portugal’s Algarve is the trending destination for American tourists this summer, Portugal also ranks in the Top 10 Fall Destinations for Americans.
